I’m coming back to this well-written Op-Ed from several days ago to share another related concern. The link I’ve pasted below goes to a recent article in The Guardian - about nuclear power, not data centers. But the concern - warming temps in rivers and other natural bodies of water - is likely to be applicable as well to those data centers which rely on water as a cooling agent. I do not know what the remedies are to cool water which becomes too warm to be an effective cooling agent (build a water cooling center to cool the water needed for data center cooling?), and I am not certain if anyone has thought this through, or even done projections of the overall power use if these grow at a rapid rate. Although there are contingency plans described in the article I linked, those involve shutting down power plants, which creates another set of problems since excessive warmth drives more use of power for home cooling.
