Thanks Lori Babbey for raising this issue. Many residents in Portage County are struggling with rising energy costs, and this decision deserves careful consideration.
Under Ohio Senate Bill 52, the county has the authority to restrict or prohibit large-scale wind and solar projects. Because of that, this is not a small decision; it will shape future economic and energy options.
The Ohio Department of Health has found no evidence that solar farms pose meaningful public health risks. At the same time, projects in other Ohio counties have generated significant local revenue for schools and communities.
Renewable energy is not a quick fix for lowering electric bills, but it can contribute to long-term price stability and energy diversification as demand continues to grow.
There are valid concerns about land use and local impact, and those should be addressed through thoughtful siting, not a blanket ban.
Before closing the door on these opportunities, I urge decision-makers to fully evaluate both the risks and the potential benefits. Once restricted, these options are difficult to bring back.
