The Kent City School District got a decisive win in Tuesday’s election, as its 9.8-mill additional tax levy passed 3,125 to 2,225.

I do not appreciate the framing of this issue. My broader discontent is encapsulated well in the phrase “Streetsboro schools, however, weren’t so lucky”. Streetsboro property owners saw a win last night, Kent property owners, however, weren’t so lucky.
People are more sensitive to preventing loss than gaining something. Therefore, the framing of the issue as either giving something to or taking something away from schools is decidedly a pro-tax stance. This position, however, directly inverts the reality of the situation. What is really being decided is whether or not money will be taken by coercion from property owners.
