The Portage County Emergency Management Agency and Kent Fire Department responded to a chemical emergency at the city of Akron Water Plant in Franklin Township Wednesday. A shelter-in-place order was issued for individuals and businesses within a half a mile of the plant.

Read moreI found out about this when my son-in-law, a firefighter/paramedic in Twinsburg called to warn me. Since then I learned about two useful resources. The first is that Portage County Emergency Management has a Facebook page called Portage Prepares where news like this is posted. The second is that they also have a smartphone app that can push messages on events. Info on the app is on their Facebook page.
